The Yuma 60L cooler by Fenik is an alternative to regular refrigerators for people with limited resources living in remote areas with limited access to electricity. Giving developing communities in high heat areas the ability to preserve food is crucial to increasing their food security and helping them efficiently use their limited resources. Yuma uses PhaseTek membrane technology which enhances evaporative cooling. PhaseTek is a part of a bladder structure which allows the system to hold and transport water to the evaporative surface where the cooling effect takes place.
The cooler uses no electricity at all, and all that is needed to activate it is to fill the internal reservoir with a clean source of water. The temperature drop caused by the process varies depending on ambient temperature and humidity, but is on average around 10-15oC from the ambient temperature. This temperature drop helps significantly increase the life of many food items such as fruits and vegetables. For example, in a high heat environment, a tomato can last for a few days but with the Yuma cooler, it can last for up to 20 days.
Weighing 3 Kgs, it’s easily portable and stackable and has 60 liters of internal storage for fruits, vegetables, and other perishable products. The water capacity is 4 liters with an average daily consumption of 0.5 liters. The water reservoir needs to be topped up every morning, and there are no other steps required from the user.
