Solar Pest Control

This challenge aims to create a solar alternative for pesticides as well as help provide electricity for farmers in rural Egypt by designing a product aimed to kill harmful insects using solar lights.

Agriculture has long been a major part of Egypt’s economy, and a huge number of farms in Egypt produce products like cotton and fruit to be exported outside Egypt. Till this day farmers still depend on pesticides to kill harmful insects to crops, without realizing the harmful side effects to it, which include disease such as cancer, nervous system diseases and reproductive problems in people exposed to pesticides, not to mention how expensive it is and how harmful it is to the environment.

The solution is simple, finding an easier and cheaper way to kill insects and such without relying on pesticides by using solar lighting, some farmers have created low-tech products that act as pesticide using solar lamps and water-filled bins!

We hope with your help in this challenge to create a solar alternative for pesticides as well as help provide electricity for farmers in rural Egypt by designing a product aimed to kill harmful insects using solar lights:

1. The product should operate for 10 hours at least
2. It should cost around 300 EGP for a small or average size one, the cheaper the better
3. It should be able to kill around 90-95% of harmful insects to crops
4. It can be used for lightning as well to help the farmers in their daily life

AWTAD will choose the winner and will help them to go into production through community groups for assembly and will leave them with a functional start up that can grow and serve to raise the quality of life in many areas of Egypt.
