Forming and Coloring the Blown Glass

Glass-blowing is one of the oldest crafts in Egypt which depends mainly uses recycled glass with manual technics. Like in many other crafts, workshops working in glass-blowing are on the verge of extinction due to several challenges faced by craftsmen such as fixation of pigments dyes in assorted colors (especially red and yellow), and the high cost of ready-made molds (which are available in a cheap cost in foreign market but not in Egypt) necessary to come up with non-traditional designs out of this art.

In order to maintain this craft and re-open its market, artisans need an innovative, cheap and safe method for dyeing glass to give them a more diversified pool of products with higher quality. This will raise their competitiveness edge. In addition, artisans are looking for ideas for non-conventional molds to help them shaping the glass and forming it since most of the molds currently used are from iron or cast iron which are expensive. However the new ideas for the molds need to resist to very high temperature of glass. We expect students, graduates, scientists or research institutions specialized in Material Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Arts or Fine Arts to submit their solutions and to be part of the solving these challenges. In return, the top solver will get a financial incentive of 1000 $ to implement the solution in collaboration with AWTAD NGO.
