Recycling for education, a leading recycling initiative in Jordan seeks an innovative way to dry the bread leftovers from hotels, restaurants and schools to turn it into fodder to provide stationery tools and books for underprivileged students and refugees.
An invitation to mechanical engineers to provide a new method to dry the large quantities of wasted bread without the need for large remote areas for a chance to win a reward of 1300 USD in collaboration with Bread for Education initiative and Dubai’s Expo 2020 Expo Live innovation program to implement the solution. Please read on for more details!
The initiative, which was launched in 2013 with the support of King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD), aims to recycle bread leftovers from hotels, restaurants and schools, dry it to turn it into fodder [1].
The money from the dry bread, which is sold to traders, is used to provide for underprivileged students and refugees in Jordan.
The initiative, which now runs by the name “Recycling for education”, includes three branches: bread for education, paper for education and plastic for education, and has expanded its work to Kuwait, Palestine and Morocco[2].
Currently, the initiative spreads the bread on rooftops to let it dry in the sun which is not very effective as it takes up to 10 days to dry a small quantity of bread especially in bad weather.
To find an innovative way to dry bread in order to grind it and recycle it into animal fodder after adding the needed supplements, the submitted solutions must fulfill the following requirements:
Capability to dry large quantities of bread (around 20Kg per batch).
Fast drying rate (within hours instead of 5 to 10 days ).
Eliminate the need for large drying areas such as rooftops .
Capability to dry the bread all year long during all weather conditions.
Low maintenance.
Low operating cost.
The winner will receive a reward of 1300 USD to implement the solution in cooperation with Bread for Education initiative and Dubai’s Expo 2020 Expo Live innovation program, according to the following conditions:
The solution should meet the aforementioned criteria;
The solution should include a clear plan of action including implementation stages, timeline, required tools/materials, estimated budget, and technical support required (if applicable);
The reward will be given in installments, in accordance to milestones set by the innovator(s) according to their plan of action;
